Moderate tremors measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale

Pragativahini News, Chikkaballapur:   Few villages of Chikkaballapur taluk which experienced tremors on Wednesday experienced tremors for the second day in a row on Thursday.  However today’s tremors was of slight increased intensity as a result of which more villages in and around the epicenter of earth quake which occurred on Wednesday experienced tremors today.

 Ganapathi Sastry, Tahasildar, Chikkaballapur said moderate tremors measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale occurred in many villages including Sadhenahalli, Peresandra, Gollahalli and other places.   The epicenter of the earth quake was closer to the one that occurred on Wednesday and Settygere village in the taluk which experienced tremors yesterday is located at a distance of about2.8 Kms from today’s epicenter Ganapathi Sastry said.  In all villages in a radius of around ten kilometers experienced tremors today said the Tahasildar and added that in addition to villages which experienced tremors yesterday few more villages including Sadhenahalli, Peresandra, Beeraganahalli experienced tremors today.    He said though no major damage was reported some house have developed cracks on the wall.

                 Narayanaswamy of Peresandra village said he felt slightly shaken at around 2.15 PM, initially he thought it was some explosion as the shake lasted only two seconds,   However later it was learnt that it was a moderate tremor. AT Krishnan, a progressive farmer from Chikkaballapur town said over exploitation of underground water and increased quarry activities in the hillocks around the villages might have triggered such tremors.  He urged the State Government to put an end to quarry activities in the area to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

                The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) has in a note stated that moderate tremors were noticed near Sadhenahalli of Gollahalli Grama Panchayat in Chikkaballapur taluk measuring 3.6 on Richter scale.  The earthquake which is of moderate intensity has not caused any damage as the area falls under the Seismic Zone II which would not result in major damages.  The note also adds that the area is located on solid rock terrain as such the damage would be minimal and people need not panic as tremors were felt locally.
